Academic Paper from the year 2022 in the subject Nature Protection, Landscape Conservation, language: English, abstract: Market participation in rural households is a vital strategy in assuring better income and a key factor in lifting rural households from poverty. The overall objective of the study is to investigate determinants of the maize market participation decisions of smallholder farmers in the maize market. The specific objectives of the study were: to investigate the factors that influence maize market participation decisions, to assess factors that determine the extent of participation, and to identify the constraints faced by farmers in maize marketing in the study area. A multistage sampling procedure was employed to contact 360 households. Semi-structured questionnaires were used to collect data from smallholder maize-producing farmers through face to face interviews. The data were analyzed using descriptive, inferential statistics and Heckman's two-stage selection model. STATA version 14 statistical package was used to process the data.
