Religious authorities, the common faithful and perhaps especially feminists are likely to be shocked and angered by Claudia Aboud's long poem, Perverse Verses. It is a general call for rebellion against the Deity by sexual transgression, a Deity whose existence remains unquestioned, but whose subversive evil is likewise affirmed. The anti-hero, Caine, pursues God through a series of actions, narratives and relationships which splinter the text and challenge the reader. We follow the lives of four young women, and a host of succubi in Hell, as well as the Devil himself through pornographic acts including bondage, rape, bestiality and incest. Claudia Aboud was precociously-educated in the West at the universities of Salamanca, in Spain and Chicago, in the United States. Ms. Aboud is forty-seven.
