While home on college Spring Break, Jay interns in his uncle's law firm, investigating leads in a sensational murder trial. Discovering information that tends to exonerate their client, J. experiences the backlash of the community, which supports the police version, despite several inconsistencies in it. His findings also implicate friends with knowledge of the killing, and he's constrained to keep secrets that adversely effect his relations with them, including with his girlfriend. The songs on the radio are "Town Without Pity" and "Hot Time, Summer In The City" as J. goes back to his summer job as a ditchdigger. Though his discoveries help to gain acquittal for the defendant, his respect for The Law is tarnished and J. decides to become an English prof and not a lawyer. Many years later J. learns the truth about the murder and the classic tragedy of the case.
