In a most clever fashion, she takes us through a young girl's emigration from Eastern Europe in the early years of the twentieth century. Readers will even pick up some Yiddish as they follow along with Oodl on her journey from being an Orthodox Jewish girl in a tiny Hungarian town to becoming a newly arrived immigrant at Ellis Island and beyond.
