In book one the Bertholet family had been of the most elite families, a line of soldiers, counselors, and Lords, under King Henry's rule. Then the king was killed, everything they had was lost and they fled for their lives, and to the new land under William Penn. We learn of their trials and hard work while starting a new life in the British colonies. From 1614 to 1626 Isaac, John, Thomas and William Oliver along with their families came to Virginia. Their Lineage goes back to King Olaf of Norway. The Oliver's came to the British colonies to the new colony of Jamestown. They helped to build the settlement in the new world in the area called Virginia. They helped build Williamsburg and fight off the Indians. In Book two the Fetter family was caught up in a war that they don't have any interest in. When the Continental Congress moved in on their territory they felt uncomfortable about the situation. The Oliver's were upset about the Stamp Act and Sugar Act. Their livelihood was in jeopardy. Their hard work with their crops was in limbo. The new acts placed taxes that threatened their survival. John's seven sons go off to fight in the Revolutionary war. They fight for their rights like freedom, Taxation without representation, fair trade, protection of their land, religion, and economic freedom in the new world. In Book three Buchanan made mistakes that led up to the war. The diaries from both families during the War Between the States compare the side of the Yankee and the side of the Rebel. They cross paths more than once and their impression of the war is rather interesting.
