PREFACE Let us get this straight: I am not writing to join issues with those controverting Christian doctrines, ordinances and values be it on the streets, books, print or broadcast news media or social media. The Bible warns us clearly to stay clear of genealogies and arguments. Rather, I am writing because my in-law, a chartered accountant, Pastor Emmanuel C. Bartels of Ghana asked me to tell him why I pay my tithe. He probably needed to add what I have to say to what he already knows or to pass on additional information to those who look up to him. This book contains more than my view and understanding of this topic. It is not wholly my personal findings. I admit the influence of several preachers on the topic whom I have listened to over my sixty years as a Christian, thirty of which I have spent as a pastor and Bible school teacher and my own understanding from the Holy Spirit. It is very important to state this from the outset: I cannot hope to be mathematically, logically, politically or scientifically correct on this and other Christian topics! No one can ever be correct when viewed from non-Christian points of view. For what can be mathematically or morbidly correct about a man being dead and buried for three days but rising up from the dead at the command of my Lord Jesus Christ? Does it make any logical sense that a well-known leper is healed instantly at the word of Jesus Christ? Was it lawful to heal the sick on a Sabbath in Israel? Was it politically correct to talk about the sins of the Jewish leaders of the time? I can go on. It must be said respectfully to the atheists, new-agers, scientologists, philosophers, doubters, people of other faiths and others too numerous to mention, that we cannot match their arguments and we do not intend to! Rather, we will continue to state what we believe in and why we believe in them without any hope of being accepted because it is not our duty to convince or convict but that of the Holy Spirit. My humble prayer is that the Holy Spirit will visit each reader as he or she peruses these few words of mine and the scriptures under reference and do what words alone cannot do in their lives. The people of the world say that information is power but we Christians know that information is not power because after Jesus Christ had spent three and a half years giving information to the apostles, he said to them, do not go into ministry without first receiving the Holy Spirit, who will fill you with power and understanding, in addition to teaching and comforting you. It is therefore not and never enough to write volumes on any Christian belief with the hope of convicting or convincing anyone. I therefore, repeat that we can only state what and why we believe and leave the rest to the Holy Spirit to be merciful on whom he will be merciful. That is exactly what I am doing with this book. Happy reading.
