The Indian Removal Act of 1830 is considered by many people to be one of the most regrettable episodes in Amiercan history. The Act was signed into law on May 28, 1830. It authorized President Andrew Jackson to grant unsettled lands west of the Mississippi River in exchange for Indian lands within existing state borders. Some Native Americans volunteered to leave, but most were forced from their homeland and traveled for months without sufficient food, clothing or shelter on what came to be known as the Trail of Tears to a new home in the West. Alabama Footprints: Banished reveals what happened to the Native-Ameircans of Alabama when they were forced to leave their homes, farms, plantations and most of their stock behind, and travel west, some at the point of a bayonet. Many transcriptions of official documents are included to tell a more complete story.--
