The Life And Times Of Caleb Milby

What really happened to all that Confederate gold? Did the Yankees get it? Did Grant and Sherman siphon off their share as spoils of war? Did it fall into the hands of a secret society? Caleb Milby's story is the only one that makes sense. The failure of the Southern forces to win the day at Gettysburg and the "Reconstruction" period after the war probably did more to influence Caleb Milby's life than he could have ever imagined. Having survived the last major battle at Sailor's Creek and after taking the oath at Appomattox, Caleb returns home to face a downtrodden, burnt, and plundered community. Richmond, Atlanta, Charleston, and Savannah had been left in ruins but the damage went deeper than destroyed infrastructure. The Southern people had lost their pride, dignity, and heritage. It would take decades and demanding work to recover. Meanwhile a secret society is carrying out their plans to divert the CSA treasury to support another army which will invade Mexico and points south. General J.O. Shelby and the Iron Brigade wait on the Texas border for a shipment of Confederate gold. This secret society, the Order of the Sons of Liberty (formerly the Knights of the Golden Circle), has plans to take over Mexico, the island of Cuba, parts of South America, and other areas of the Caribbean to continue the institution of slavery. At the beginning of the War of Northern Aggression, the society supports the South and the Confederate states. However, after Gettysburg, doubts spring forth and the inner circle (prominent pro-slavery gentlemen) begins to lay plans for after the war. They begin by approaching and supporting William Quantrill who has been employing guerrilla warfare tactics in Missouri. Funding, especially gold, is always a requirement to build and maintain an army. The society pressures Quantrill to raid Yankee payroll detachments and Kansas towns. To support him in this endeavor, Quantrill recruits two sets of brothers who are crack guerrilla fighters, the James and Younger brothers. Along comes Caleb Milby, former soldier in the 26th Virginia Volunteers, who as circumstances would dictate, happens upon information that eventually leads him on a long journey. He ends up crossing paths with Jessie James, a.k.a. Thomas Howard, a.k.a. J. Frank Dalton and the two experience the adventure of their lives.
