The Sword In The Pulpit : Sermons From The Word Of God

For those of us who have grown up (at least spiritually) in a small congregation of the Lord's church, we know the unique problems that can be faced by its members. My wife and I spent a career in the U. S. Navy, moving from city to city. In each new location, we placed membership in a congregation with less than 150 members. Some of the issues these churches faced included difficulties in finding qualified teachers and elders, or even men able to fill in for an absent preacher. Often a small core of dedicated servants seemed to be counted on to do everything. The good thing about these small churches is that opportunity abounds for those ready and willing to serve. A difficulty can become a blessing when looked at in the right light. In addition, people can be drawn out of their shells when approached and asked to step up, becoming stronger Christians in the process. One of the things that I have had the honor to do on occasion, as many other men have had over the years, is to be one of those men who did fill in for the preacher when he was out of town. Contained herein is a small collection of some of those sermons given over the years. Topics include: (1) Lord, Remember Me: the account of the thief on the cross; (2) The Wisdom of Jesus: a study of His ministry and what He said about Himself; (3) The Power of God's Word: How God's word works in our lives: (4) Spiritual Suicide: a study of what happens to those who turn their backs on God; (5) How to Overcome Worldliness: How to overcome our love of the world and dedicate our lives to Christ; (6) How to Make Your Election Sure: focuses on the steadfast Christian as an example of how we can know our salvation is assured; (7) The Way of Righteousness: Looks at the path one takes to get to the narrow gate of salvation, as laid out in the New Testament; (8) Beware of False Teachers: looks at the dangers of false teachings, and how we can recognize those who would lead us away from the truth. Having been given the opportunity to teach and preach over the years has been a great experience. One that has led to spiritual growth that might not have otherwise been achieved. I recommend it to all who may be called upon. The sermons contained herein represent a part of my own spiritual growth as a Christian, and I wanted to share them because it was a pleasure to write and preach them, and hopefully it will be an edifying and enjoyable time for you when you read them.
