A definitive history of the Grand Canyon Caverns located near Peach Springs, Arizona featuring the largest dry caves in the country. In 1927, a cowboy and woodcutter for the Sante Fe Railroad named Walter Peck discovered a large hole while on his way to a poker game. Returning with friends the following day he tied a rope to his waist and was lowered into the gaping darkness. His single lantern captured glittering reflections and Peck thought that he had discovered a gold mine. He grabbed some samples of the shiny rocks, sent them to be assayed and bought the property. When the assay reports were completed, he learned that his mother lode was nothing more than worthless iron oxide. Being a consummate entrepreneur, Peck decided to turn his worthless hole into a tourist attraction by charging the curious 10 cents a head to be placed into a steel bucket and lowered with a lantern into the darkness below. Much has changed for this Route 66 landmark over the years. Currently a motel, restaurants, RV spaces, camping and most excitingly, the tour of the caverns themselves which begins with a descent by an elevator of 22 stories to one of the most interesting natural wonders you will ever see.
