In April, 2019, Keisha Johnson and Richard Allen, an interracial couple, are happily raising two teenaged children and enjoying their privileged lives. Quirky, even odd, they are best friends and lovers. But when their family becomes one of the 510 families in Greater Chicago who experience murder that year, nothing seems to remain of their happiness. Barely functioning, deep in grief, the survivors stumble along, fragile and devastated. She knows only that he was a civil rights leader who died in 1985, never knowing he had a child. Her search leads her to Philadelphia, to MOVE, a unique Black utopian organization, and to Philadelphia's violent campaign to destroy MOVE. Will what she learns, and the Jamaican-American extended family she meets, give her life new purpose? And what of the children? Will other family secrets ever be revealed? Based on historical events, Dark Crossings is a story about good, intelligent people committed to those they love and to big causes. It is about lost and found families surviving the worst.
