Arboretum in a Jar is a mosaic memoir. It uses a variety of masks to evoke the fractured self that results from a traumatic childhood. By weaving these personae together into a meta-narrative, the poet seeks to re-integrate these parts of herself into a person who is, if not whole, at least cohesive. In this process, she evokes and challenges the tropes of childhood, innocence, and femininity-and in particular, the archetype of the princess. She reexamines stories that have been told already, invigorating and reframing the narratives in ways that transcend the victimization and passivity traditionally imposed on their protagonists.
