My Faith Walk: From Blessing to Blessing

My life as Zulekha had a very dramatic start. It begins on a warm spring day in 1979. My parents were both 17 years old at the time of my birth. They were both in their senior year of high school. My mother's water broke during class and as a result, my mother and I had to be rushed to John Hopkins in Baltimore, MD. When I was born on May 16, 1979, at 10:00 am in the morning, I weighed 2 pounds and 3 ounces. My Mom-Mom Nellie, Pop-Pop Roger, and Great Grandmom Annie came to see me at the Hospital. She prayed for all the babies on the Neo-Natal Ward my mother says. My mom told me stories and showed me pictures of myself when I was in the incubator. I was so amazed and shocked to see myself that way. From that time on until now, the Lord Jesus has given me a strong spirit to live and to succeed. My mom and dad took me home from the hospital when I gained a weight of l4 pounds and 3 ounces. As time passed, I continued to grow like any other toddler but, I was unable to walk independently. My parents got married on March 13, 1980, after my father received his first duty station for the Navy. My mother and I left Salisbury, MD, and temporarily stayed in Elizabeth City, NC with one of her friends. It took one month before a place was available where my father was assigned for us to go.
