Pippa and Pete, young boy and girl twins, love visiting their grandmother at Sugar-Gum Cottage, her home in the country. Naturally, grandma adores her grandchildren, but she also loves her two cats Butch and Betsy who are jealous and at times naughty and unfriendly towards the twins. Butch and Betsy's bad behaviour leads to plenty of problems for grandma when the twins visit and very often, she has to resort to removing them from the comfort of cosy armchairs in her cottage, and out into the garden to calm down. They don't really like being in the outdoor world, but when cats are on the prowl, they are also likely be a problem for the native animals who live out there.Just by chance one day, Pippa finds a rickety old tree house to escape to, which soon becomes her sanctuary. It is somewhere she can hide and nurse her wounds and it is where she meets and gains sympathy from two new possum friends who live up in the higher branches of the tree. Sometimes though, even they get annoyed with Butch and Betsy, who often climb their tree and place paws where they are not wanted.A series of events then follows, leading to the destruction of the tree house. But who is to blame for it?Grandma blames Butch and Betsy for the catastrophe, but looking more closely at the events that set it all in motion, would they have been able to steal chicken pieces from grandma's fridge, if someone else had not left it open.?
