MOHAMMED SHIRIN MAGHRIBI... Selected Poems, Translation & Introduction Paul Smith Mohammed Shirin Maghribi (1350-1407) was born near Isfahan and died in Tabriz. His poetic name of Maghribi is said to have come from the fact that he travelled in the Maghrib in North-West Africa where he was invested with the dervish mantle by a master who traced himself back to the great Ibn 'Arabi who had a great influence on as well as Maghribi, Iraki and Jami in their philosophy of the Unity of Being. Jami says that in Tabriz Maghribi was a friend of Kamal Khujand where they sometimes argued over mystical questions. In Maghribi's ghazals one can see even clearly the spiritual influence of Ibn 'Arabi, Sana'i, 'Attar, Rumi and 'Iraqi. Maghribi himself says in one of his poems... From His waves arose 'Iraqi and Maghribi and from His ferment... Sana'i and 'Attar. Rida-quili Khan said of him, "His doctrine is the Unity of Being and he is inspired by the rapture of Spiritual Vision and all through his poems there is nothing but this one idea." Being acquainted with Kamal of Khujand in Tabriz who swapped poems for many years with Hafiz of Shiraz it is most likely that he was influenced by the mystical ghazals of both of them as well as the poets mentioned above. His small Divan of about 2300 couplets consists mainly of ghazals, ruba'is and tarji-bands. Here is the largest selection of his Ghazals, Rubai's, and a Qit'a from the Persian in English in the correct form and meaning with Introduction on Poetry in Sufism, The Forms in which he wrote, his Life, Times, Poetry, Selected Bibliography. Large Format Paperback 7" x 10" 188 pages. COMMENTS ON PAUL SMITH'S TRANSLATION OF HAFIZ'S 'DIVAN'. "It is not a joke... the English version of ALL the ghazals of Hafiz is a great feat and of paramount importance. I am astonished." Dr. Mir Mohammad Taghavi (Dr. of Literature) Tehran. "Superb translations. 99% Hafiz 1% Paul Smith." Ali Akbar Shapurzman, translator into Persian and knower of Hafiz's Divan off by heart.
