In the 1970s, the author made two journeys across North Africa, keeping a diary on both adventures. When he travelled to Morocco in 1974 on his own, he was still a teenager, and within hours of landing on African soil for the first time, he had been ripped off by a Canadian. It proved to be a steep learning curve as with little money he went from Tangier down to the desert.When he travelled through Egypt, he was now a student and more worldly wise.The book captures a time that is now long lost and is unique for that as very little has been written that records what it was like to explore two countries that, in their different ways, were going through periods of transition. This was a time when the likes of the Rolling Stones among many had been coming to North Africa to find escape and inspiration and yet few details have emerged of what they found at the time.The account is both vivid and down to earth. This is no luxurious trip.
