A few decades ago, a colleague of mine said that higher education reform was a simple three-step process: hang all professors, burn down the campus, and rebuild everything from ground up. This bad joke seems to have become reality: students are hanging professors, the public is burning the Ivory Tower, and various organizations are busy reforming education. Unfortunately, the more reform they put in, the worst it gets. The author of this book respectfully disagrees. Fundamentally, there is nothing wrong with our universities. Technological and economic changes created a lot of challenges for our glorious institutions, that much is clear. However, these challenges are easy to address with simple, sensible, and low/no cost adjustments. This book briefly analyzes a few dozen challenges and offers suggestions on how to overcome them.
