Guide to Edinburgh Monuments

Who are the people or events behind the monuments in Edinburgh? What do they tell us about the city. This guide provides the answers. Edinburgh has been shaped by its residents as much as by its geography. Some who have contributed to its development are honoured by monuments. These have been erected over several centuries and reflect the people and ideas that have been important to successive generations. This book is a journey to discover the monuments and the stories behind them. Journeys of exploration are open, not defined, nor ever completed. Details of the monuments around the city are provided in sections and chapters, each monument or group of monuments accorded a section. The sections are arranged by location, in one of six chapters: Princes Street and its gardens; The New Town; Calton Hill; Royal Mile; Leith; rest of Edinburgh. The book cover shows, in rows, a few monuments from each of these chapters. A 7th chapter looks at the plaques on benches. The final chapter, chapter 8, discusses the themes behind the monuments, what they tell us about the city. Who should be remembered in monuments and the relative lack of monuments to women is discussed. The chapter also discusses other ways of honouring. Monuments do not last forever and this is discussed.An index at the end of the book points to the page number and section for each monument. But primarily the purpose of the book is to encourage interest in the monuments in Edinburgh, to encourage residents and visitors alike to explore the monuments and how they contribute to Edinburgh.
