May I is a story about innocence loss, misconceptions, self-identity, forgiveness and healing. It tells the story of Layla and Anthony. Anthony's struggled with self-identity during his childhood, considering his mixed race. He went through phases of self-hate and regret. It was during that time that his mother introduced him to music, which changed his trajectory. On the other hand, Layla struggled with her own issues of acceptance and belonging. The loss of her mother at an early age made her development different. Often, she would fight to solve her problems. Frustrated, her dad enroller her to dance classes which sparked her passion for dancing and singing.Layla and Anthony were both music majors that met while in college. Anthony, the pretty boy with exotic looks could have any woman he wanted. Although his good looks afforded him opportunities to live his wildest dreams, he never wanted to be known for them, rather his musical prowess and intelligence. However, that did not stop him from playing the field. During their senior year Layla and Anthony pair up to work on a project. Their vibe and chemistry are off the charts. Not only do they inspire each other musically, but physically too. That is until Layla catches Anthony in a compromising position with another woman. That ended their proverbial, though unofficial love affair. Layla is devastated. Instead of dealing with the situation what does Anthony do? He ducks and hides, avoiding Layla at all costs.Layla moves on with her life and attempts to date again only to experience a traumatic even; which has a major impact on her. To deal with the trauma she pours her heart into dancing and making music. She unilaterally decides that love and relationships are not in the cards for her; she wants to live a nondescript, loveless life. Meanwhile, Anthony moves on with his life too. Years later, they reconnect after literally running into each other. Their exchange, at first, is tumultuous to say the least. Once they get over the sins of the past they attempt friendship, although they are very much still attracted to each other. Anthony notices that Layla is different, he doesn't know why, but the light that once was her 'Hennessy' eyes are now emotionless and full of fear. Be that as it may, Anthony is drawn to Layla, his muse, and for the first time in his life he wants to pursue a woman and build a life with her. However, this is proving itself challenging because the Layla that he once knew is now gone.
