Y.B. Taylor "reaches and teaches through poetry." With "IN MY SHOES! Poems of Introspection," she births her sixth literary child, and continues her journeys, experiences and realities as an African American woman born, in the 1950s, when segregation was still the norm. Y.B. Taylor's poetry is reflective of her upbringing as an only child of protective and nurturing parents. She finds her voice and self through her writing. Her voice provides her perspective of living and being challenged as a person of color, her perspective of living and being challenged as a women, and her perspective of living and being challenged as "one of the first" or "one of a few." Since 2009, with the birth of her first literary child, "What I Know ... Poems of Life," Y.B. Taylor has always contended her poetry is reflective of HER experiences ... not all African Americans' experiences. When writing poetry with historical references, she researches to bring a sense of authenticity to her words. She provides extensive ENDNOTES, which explain many of the historical and cultural references and definitions for commonly and not so commonly used terms made throughout her poetry. Y.B. Taylor realizes many of her poems are similarly themed with focus on INjustice, INequality, DIScrimination, DISenfranchisement - four of many legal INconsistencies and DIStinctions directed at and applied to people of color. She also realizes it is normal for individuals to hear, read, and observe simultaneously, but receive and perceive differently, validating her use of similarly themed poems with a goal of capturing the attention and augmenting the thinking and comprehension of those who fail to understand what it means to walk "IN MY SHOES!" "IN MY SHOES! Poems of Introspection," contains original poetry and essays; the contents of the titles range in length from a single-page to eight pages. As an individual, Y.B. Taylor does not take herself too seriously, but she is serious about her writing. Her evolution of thought is evident in her writing, as personal life changes, voluntary and involuntary, have influenced her to look at life from varying perspectives. When asked, Y.B. Taylor will gladly state, "Poetry is my tell!" "In Y.B. Taylor's Shoes, I found songs of truth. A rhythmic chant; our communal thoughts posed so precisely by this talented poet. At times, it seems she is reading my mind, distilling my thoughts into fluid chants of verse. Remarkably timely and timeless, our memories placed on the page with the melodies of our histories celebrated or challenged with every phrase." - Daphne Maxwell Reid
