This is an autobiography that traces not the fate of human bodies, conversations or monologues. It is a history of places, spaces and textures. In this first volume of my autobiography, I journey with you through the first decade of my life, beginning in the land between two rivers, Iraq and culminating in Jordan. All the while, I share with you the effects that war, diaspora and migration have had on the physical places I lived in and their enchanting memories in my imagination. The narrative style and focus of this journey is unique and different from other biographical works. Instead of highlighting human interactions, conversations between family members and friends or coming-to-age epics involving human love and sacrifice, I focus on the emotions and relationships bound to architecture, walls and textures. I attempt to construct threads of speech from whatever remains of these vestiges in my memory and share with you their captivating sway over the human dimension of one's past and childhood. The motivation to write this autobiography began as a venture to author a primer on Sufi metaphysics. Already within the first few pages, it became clear that the only way such an endeavor could be accomplished meaningfully is by giving what is due to spaces and how they are transformed once their imaginal spirits are freed from their dimensional bodies.Volumes 2 and 3 of the "Souk of Nostalgia," which explore my migration to America, are forthcoming and will be published sometime in the near future.
