This is the tale of an idealistic young physician searching for universal truths while coping with the harsh realities of doing his internship at a large university connected, city/county hospital. Dave has difficulty dealing with the pathos he encounters there and isn't sure he is capable of making the sacrifices necessary to become a physician. He doesn't want to give up who he is, to become what he wants to be. His best friend and mentor is a member of the lucky gene club. Henry is handsome, brilliant, and wealthy, but he is also cynical, pragmatic, and devoid of emotion in his approach to life. He wants to do research in order to insulate himself from the psychological impact of dealing with patients and the pitfalls of the current healthcare system. Sharon is beautiful, intelligent, and sophisticated but damaged by her childhood traumas. She became a flight attendant in order to run or fly away from her past. Her exceptional looks intimidate some men, attract others who pursue her for sex, and she also struggles with an abusive former lover. As an intern in a large city/county teaching hospital, he not only has to address the medical and surgical problems of his patients but is exposed to the social ills that plague their lives; including racism, bigotry, and wealth inequality. The story is a deep dive into the complexities of life, the human condition, the mores of the current culture, and the morals of a nihilistic, existential society. The narrative follows Dave, Henry, Sharon, and their group of friends for a year as Dave endures the physical, emotional, and psychological challenges of his internship. He is filled with insecurity and his naivety produces conflicts within him. Sharon has her own issues; from an obsessed, violent ex-lover, to her concerns about commitment, relationships, and marriage. The crisis comes when Sharon falls fatally ill, and Dave has to sit by as she fights for her life. Her life and death struggle finally mold him into a consummate professional: a physician.
