Marie Suize was a French immigrant who made a fortune as a miner in the California Gold Rush of 1848. In order to work effectively at the mines, she wore men's clothing - for which she was arrested three times. She embraced her nickname of Marie Pantalon (meaning trousers) and even signed legal documents with that name. She later grew grapes on her ranch and became the most prolific vintner in the Jackson area, opening wine shops in both San Francisco and Virginia City, Nevada. Although she later lost her fortune gambling with investments in Nevada's Comstock Lode, she lived her life the way she wanted to - free and unencumbered by the expectations of her gender.
