As a medical student, Dr. Benjamin captures the progressive erosion of well-being and sense of altruism that happens to future doctors during the most vitriolic year of medical school: third year. She captures events not only as they unfold around her, but how she reacts to these events and how she interprets them, gonzo journalism style. The entire book was written on the app Notability, subtly typed on a mini iPad that was stashed in her white coat 24 hours a day. Instead of just relaying one or two memorable patients stories, or looking back and reflecting on medical school years later, her book takes place in real-time. Each chapter of her medical memoir is a rotation in a different medical specialty, spread throughout different hospitals, within a small Midwest City.
