My black cloud followed me to the front door. I opened it. Early Fall streamed in and made shafts of light filled with dancing dust particles spread out behind me. From inside my screen, I could hear laughter. Flora was walking along the inside rail of the picket fence between our two yards. She had herself balanced exactly on the half of each foot that fit snugly up next to the pickets. If it hadn't been for that black cloud following me around I would have gone on over and played with them. As it was the idea of standing on my porch and making a loud noise to make Flora lose her balance seemed like the most fun thing to do.I wanted to yell from just behind the screen where I could see her, but she couldn't see me. The vision of her falling on the point of the pickets not on the ground kept the sound trapped inside my throat. The door squeaked as it opened. Flora jumped down and turned to look at me. "Are you trying to sneak up on me," she demanded."No." I sat on the step."You goin' to the movie, Iris?" Nora wanted to know."Not today."Nora came close to the fence and leaned her arms lightly on the pickets. "Why are you so quiet, Iris. What's wrong?""What's wrong with you?" I countered. "Why are you out here laughing and playing when you just had a funeral for Jeep? Doesn't it make you sad that he is gone?"Flora grabbed her heart with both hands and fell backward on the grass. "Oh, I'm dying," she wailed. "Poor Jeep is gone."Nora kicked the sole of Flora's shoe, "Stop that," she said. "Feeling bad won't bring Jeep back. Besides, we can get another dog." "And, what about a person," I threw at them. "Can you get another sister, or another brother? Can you get another Mother or Father?""Shut up Iris," Flora yelled. She ran in her own house and slammed the door.
