Rome AD 68. The Apostle Peter is incarcerated in a dungeon, awaiting his death by crucifixion. He asks his best friend and Savior for a final blessing. In return, the Lord asks Peter to humble himself, once again, and reveal something he has kept secret for thirty five years. Just prior to the Lord's prophesy of Peter's denying of Him three times, the Lord informed Peter that Satan desired to have him, to sift him as wheat. This historical fiction book examines the struggle between Peter and Satan when Peter was at his weakest and most vulnerable point. Peter left the courtyard of Caiaphas in tears, "weeping bitterly". There is no mention of him in scripture of his whereabouts for the next two days. There are two scriptures in the New Testament that inform bible readers that Peter met with the resurrected Lord before he appeared to the other disciples. That must have been an extremely humbling moment for Peter. In my opinion, these two days were spent by Peter, trying to make things right-repenting of his lies. Peter may have felt unworthy of any blessing after lying and leaving his best friend and beloved Savior to suffer alone and this is exactly what Satan wanted. I believe this opportunity was not missed by Satan to try to convince Peter that he was not even worthy to pray or even to live, let alone be forgiven. I also believe that Peter recommitted to never place the fear of man above his devotion and trust in God again. I believe that Peter committed to stand boldly and testify of the divinity of Jesus as the Christ, even to the point of his own death. This "new creature"- a penitent, committed Peter, was only now ready to fearlessly do the bidding of the Lord and to take on the mantle of senior apostle following the ascension of the resurrected Christ. Peter fought through the severe buffeting of Satan and experienced first hand the divine, supreme and freely given mercy from Him who is most merciful. What once had been his weakness, now became Peter's strength. He would never deny Christ again. Moreover, Peter knew that Jesus was the redeemer of all and that He lived and was willing to extend His mercy to all who would come unto Him.
