The doodle of a man creeping over a barrier with a large nose began popping up throughout Europe during the Second World War. The character was fondly known amongst soldiers as Chad. Starting during the First World War, Australian Soldiers, after taking or being encamped at a certain place, would write Foo Was Here to let others know they had gotten there first. Over 20 years following the first Australian Soldiers scribbles, US combat troops took the doodle of Chad, replaced the Foo with Kilroy, and created the Kilroy Was Here tag as we know it today. The origin of the graffiti does not matter. It's omnipresence was the most important.I hoped through this to explore why art is so pervasive in dire situations. It seeks to answer why someone searches for meaning in creativity when they cannot find it in reality. While all of our battles might not be fought with iron and fire, and they might not be fought on a scale larger than one person, they are equally as dangerous. Our response to these wars tests our mettle, our grit, and our decision making. It brings out the best of us and the worst of us. It's a battleground we will all fight on. Like the Kilroy Was Here graffiti of World War Two, it's ubiquitous.
