Podkayne manages alcohol and food on her family's spaceship, the Mother Lode. Her mother is the Captain and her father is the First Officer and Chief Purser. The right man turns out to be Joe Potterby; he's leaving Earth because they forbid surgery to force out migration. He is going with the ship to Alpha Centauri. Poddy and Joe just hit it off... she becomes his girlfriend but, if Joe gets his surgery at the final port of call, as well as her virginity, they have to stop the sabotage of the ship from rival spacelines...
