Too often, I find myself living life as a whirling dervish, allowing myself to be pushed and pulled in many different directions at once. My home office is full of partially completed books and music. My yard has a number of projects in various states of becoming. Some of my important relationships have issues left open. I often say there are not enough hours in a day to complete the tasks on my plate, but I know that is not true. The problem is my lack of focus and presence on the task and life before me at any given time.In the following pages, I refer to a lack of focused attention as praying with one eye open. It is neither bad nor uncommon to attempt to multi-task our way through our to-do lists, and sometimes that is a necessary reality. Most of the time, however, at least for me, attempting to multi-task is not a necessity but a symptom of my lack of focus. The bulk of this book attempts to help identify the forces that pull us out of the moment, as well as providing strategies for returning to it. The appendices provide tools to aid in the process. My prayer is that you and I can find our way back to the beautiful and expansive moment where all of life is happening all of the time.
