Upon the death of his grandmother a young man returns home. The emotional return unleashes the colorful story of an African American boy raised on a farm in the 1950s and 1960s, in southwest Louisiana. Forced to live on the farm at an early age, he seeks to escape the hard work and strict guidelines established by his grandmother only with no success. In the process, he falls into countless pitfalls and misadventures. Eventually he grows to love the farm, the nearby hunting and fishing. That is until he he believes himself to be a man and the farm is nothing more than a hindrance to his life's pleasures. At which time his grandmother poses a question, "so you think you a man?" Not wishing to hold him back, his grandmother reluctantly grants him his freedom to find out. Upon his return to her funeral, he realizes you don't become a man, you grow into a man. And the farm was more than a place to raise crops and animals but also a place to raise up a man.
