This is a coming-of-age story about Fred Nash, an adolescent emerging from a repressive home life in the midwest of the 1960's. As he heads off to his freshman year in college, he suffers the loss of a first love and a nagging fear that he will lose his student deferment and be shipped off to kill and die in Vietnam. Later, as the year progresses, he becomes overwhlmed with nightmares and depression. But with the help of psychotherapy, and his good friend, Peter, he begins to see the light despite some bizarre hitchhiking and other events.
