Soon after the October Revolution, civil war broke out between the Bolshevik "reds" on the one side and the "whites" and other socialist factions on the other. The Russian Civil War resulted in the deaths and suffering of millions of people, and in 1922 the victorious Bolsheviks established the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR).
