A simple written but powerful story of growing up in the fractured South, It is a story of abuse, family abuse, and child abuse a type of abuse that once was overlooked and considered just a part of the times. After the rise and fall of slavery, and sharecropping, another labor drive entity evolved more foul than the first. Slavery had been deemed an evil institution and cast aside but the needs of landowners and labors still existed. Even in the early nineteen hundred, the stain of slavery had ingrained in men, especially black men a strange survival technique. It was a time when large families were in vogue. Twelve to fifteen children per family were not uncommon. The father opted for boys the same as the slave master because they could do more work. The father would broker a deal and the family would move into the dilapidated slave shack. Their job was to tend the livestock and work the fields. This was akin to pimping out the family.
