As an educator, my students must read about and listen to the news about politics. The year 2017 has been very challenging to my students and it has not been easy explaining the role of the three branches of government. Since most of my students' families are immigrants, news about immigration policies are very important to all of us. Parents are scared and worried. Students are scared and it's my job to allay their fears. One day, one of my juniors walked up to my desk and whispered, "Ms. Swift, would you write a book about my story? I think I am illegal." Without hesitation, I said, "It would be my pleasure. Start talking." Later, I read the manuscript to his mother and she said, "Thank you. That's sound right." Usually the parents immigrate first, then the children follow. While I believe most children's experiences are like Carlos's, I hope the practice ends soon. Please read Carlos's story. Incidents mentioned will start a new dialogue at the water cooler.
