Tired of fighting for the Confederacy, Porter deserts the Civil War. His plan to migrate to California is interrupted when Quinn, a grieving widow, asks for Porter's help restoring her family's ranch. Porter stays, but things soon get complicated when he falls in love with Quinn's daughter, Rose. Rose is a God-fearing Christian; Porter is an unapologetic atheist. Rose decides her best opportunity for salvation is to follow her younger sister into the Salt Lake Valley and become a sister wife to a wealthy Mormon. When tragedy strikes, it falls to Porter and Quinn to mete out justice and seek their own redemption.
