Between 1920 and 1944, fascist Italy envisaged elementary schools as a place for constructing child-soldiers obedient to the regime. Teaching Freedom recounts twelve stories of elementary schoolteachers who opposed this model, educating their students in solidarity and awareness, and sometimes paying the ultimate price for the freedom they taught.
