I grew up in the 1950-60s in a newly developed suburban neighborhood across in the East Bay Many of these homes, including mine, were pur-chased in the late 40 and early 50s by World War II vets with the assistance of the GI Bill. My new friends in this little village all seemed to have former military dads and most all of our moms stayed home as housewives. It was the quintessential 50's suburban childhood. However, the second thing we shared was having World War II veteran fa-thers. This made our lives a bit different from that of the Beavers, because we were being raised by parents who'd lived through a World War and with our veteran fathers, we were living with how they handled their war memo-ries. Growing up, I heard of some friends who'd say their dads were totally silent about the war and didn't want it mentioned, then there were others who'd say theirs were living with terrible wake-in-the-night nightmares that woke the whole house up. Dad didn't write his book until after retirement. I remember him feverish-ly putting pen to paper in the mid to late 70s to early's 80s. I can see my mom trying to keep up with a him at her typewriter and my older brother, Rob frequently consulting with dad about it. ( Rob is a Viet Nam era Vet and he and dad shared a military bond). I think the book was completed in the mid to late 1980s.I immediately embraced my fathers book. I recognized it as a voice for him and his fellow sailors that went through so much. Finally, an eye witness view into their lives during those battle ridden years. Incredible descriptions of exactly what they went through. Not seeing land from their ship for al-most a year. Not stepping foot on earths soil for over a year! How can that not affect one to their core? I found his book to be an explanation, as back-ground, to their bravery and suffering. I also knew that was his intention. He truly cared for his fellow sailors.
