Uzbek is a Turkic language used by approximately 26 million native speakers in Uzbekistan and throughout central Asia. This textbook is intended for students who have completed elementary coursework in Uzbek and have familiarity with its basic grammatical concepts and vocabulary. The goal of the textbook is to enable students to communicate in Uzbek at the intermediate level. Using a wide selection of materials and task-oriented activities, the book develops the four language skills (listening, reading, speaking, and writing) within realistic situations and contexts. Special attention is given both to grammatical accuracy and to culture. Topics covered include work, study, personal interests, and travel. The book uses the Cyrillic alphabet--the alphabet used in current government reports and the mass media as well as in archival material from the Soviet era. For learners who have not encountered the Cyrillic alphabet, the volume presents an appendix describing it in comparison with the Latin alphabet. The volume also includes Uzbek-English and English-Uzbek glossaries. An accompanying CD-ROM provides audio and video files that complement activities in the book.
