Kôzô Uno is widely recognized as one of the most important Marxist economists of the twentieth century, and yet most of his work remains untranslated and thus unavailable to the Anglo-Saxon world. In this groundbreaking study, Uno argues that capitalism must be studied at three distinct levels of abstraction: at the level of pure theory, couched in the form of Hegelian dialectics; at the level of concrete capitalist history, which must be recounted with full empirical detail; and at a mind-range level between the two, focused on capitalism's developmental stages. In this book, he illustrates both the necessity and utility of this mid range theory by summarizing the three types of economic policy that the bourgeois state successively adopted: mercantilism, liberalism and imperialism. In the process he also indicated how economics can related to and cross-fertilize with other branches of social science, such as law and politics, only at this level of abstraction, thus providing a new and important framework for developing an adequate theory of the bourgeois state. Nowhere else is Marx's insight into 'the state as the epitome of bourgeois society' more vividly endorsed than in this book. First published in Japanese as Keizai-Seisakuran by kobundo, ltd. in 1936. The current work is a translation of the enlarged and revised edition of 1971.
