Bonita Byrnes comes of age during the early days of the civil rights movement in white working class neighborhoods in Birmingham where her family moves frequently, always looking for a better life. Pearl, her mother, runs a boarding house near the medical center. Ida, her black cook who is a woman of enormous faith, becomes her confidante. Bonita¿s mother goes from one bad relationship to another. She leaves Bonita¿s father and quickly falls in love with a young Marine, just home from Korea.
