The election results flowed in, confirming the crowd's hopes that the first black candidate for mayor of the historic southern city was the winner. Teems of supporters headed to the park in the center of the city to acclaim his victory. The candidate strode to the platform from which he would address the crowd and climbed it. Before he uttered a word he was struck by a fusillade of bullets, killing him instantly. In the confusion no one could identify the assassins who escaped undetected. The National Guard, all white, was called in to curb the rioting that broke out.
