Lila applies for a defense job at Higgins Boatbuilders in New Orleans. Reared in a small bi-lingual town in southwest Louisiana, she yearns to leave home. The opening up of jobs for women at Higgins in 1943 gives her a chance to move to WWII New Orleans. With his French background, her high school boyfriend Edwin volunteers for the Army and serves as a translator for the French Resistance. At the USO, Lila meets Josh, a fighter pilot from Maryland, who trains in southern England for bombing missions to Germany and eventually participates in what becomes known as D-Day--back cover.
