Kate Steel and her younger brother Oli live with their nasty father and distant mother. Unbeknownst to all but Kate, however, they also live with ghosts - friendly ghosts. But as she approaches the Festral Fire on her thirteenth birthday there is a real chance that Kate won't be able to see the ghosts any longer. Quite rightly terrified of the life she will lead if she is no longer surrounded by the ghosts she has known all her life, she nevertheless has little idea of what it would really mean to be able to see everything in the ghostly world, or that not everthing in that world would be pleased to see her.
