The Hope Within is the story of my life journey over these first 82 years. It sets my life context beginning with our family origins and the world I was born into. I was born in the midst of the depression, then came World War II, followed by the prosperity of the 50s with the McCarthy witch hunts. The story delves into the cultural upheavals of the 60s and the further social tumult stirred up by the Viet Nam War, and then reflects on the reactionary backlashes which combined to bend, if not break the American social contract. These times have worked together to make my lifetime both rich and perplexing. The memoir continues with descriptions of the nurture and education that enabled me to pursue my vocation as a clergyperson, sociologist, teacher and ecumenical executive. The book shares my work in state, national and international settings. My vocation took me to 67 of the 100 largest metropolitan areas around the world -- often as a consultant, speaker or participant in ecumenical colloquies. I share many stories ranging from the mundane, to the humorous as well as sharing my involvement in history making events. The memoir ends with reflection on what it all means and an Appendix listing 304 of my studies, speeches and papers - but no sermons. And of course the "Hope Within" that always pulled me forward is rooted the curiosity that comes from always knowing the story is not yet finished.
