After briefly examining the development of modern violent extremism, subsequent chapters examine various theories to explain online radicalisation put forward by several academics. The author systematically tested these theories by observing online extremist activities, engaging and interacting with extremist groomers, recruiters, those identifying themselves as 'holy warriors' committed to jihad, and others who were in the process of being radicalised. Only those theories which passed scrutiny have been examined in subsequent chapters.
