Thirty-year-old, John Jaeger Bestman or better known as "The Hunter", is disturbed from his sleep by the sounds of a deadly gunshot, a sound that he has become all too familiar with as a game ranger in the Wild Side Park, South Africa. In spite of his valiant efforts, John fails to stop the poachers. He quits! Seeking refuge from his strife in an exotic honeymoon destination, he finds out that his best friend, Karthik, is still involved in illegal street fighting. After not agreeing to take a dive in his latest fight, Karthik's manager, "The Boss", wants Karthik to pay with his life. John and his wife, Karlien, get caught in the crossfire of bullets and words. The Boss catches them and reveals his involvement in the illegal rhino horn trade spearheaded by, Gunter Miller, a poacher that John has been hunting for a long time. A diabolical deal is made! Karthik must fight the Boss's bodyguard, Damon Bones, to the death, but how can Karthik kill his own half-brother to free another? John returns to South Africa to connect the disjointed dots. With time running out, John figures he should probably make peace with his older brother, Jorn, whom he does not speak to after their heated ideological battle but who could guess that Jorn was working in the same field (no pun intended) as his younger brother! Jorn's incredible breakthrough research funded by billionaire philanthropist, Mr Alan Fountain, had attracted the attention of the media and that of the Boss. A game of cat and mouse ensues at the highest level between these two heavyweights of the over- and underworlds with John and Jorn caught in the center of the ring. When John and Jorn finally escape, they get the news that, a rhino from the park is about to be poached by Gunter, and it needs their help. Rhino Was Rhino Is, is a story about an anti-hero complemented by a number of strong characters whose indelible journeys are interwoven towards saving the majestic rhinos.
