Edith watches the lovers in her favorite movies, The Umbrellas of Cherbourg and Dr. Zhivago, and wonders when that magic will happen to her. A child of 1950s' suburbia, her repressive upbringing didn't give her much experience with the opposite sex. Her search for the spark of romance has just left her with dud after dud. There was the fake psychic, the emotionally aloof graduate student...the list goes on and on. Maybe the universe is trying to tell her that smoldering desire isn't for her. When Edith finally says adieu to passion and settles for the staid, solid Bruce, she thinks that she's doing the right thing. She couldn't be more wrong.
