Fourteen-year-old Coy Povine leads a miserably insignificant life with his domineering, quick-tempered mother and milquetoast father in rural Mississippi. When his quirky cousin Woody decides to steal a truck and coerces Coy to ride along they have a deadly run-in with corrupt deputy sheriff and family enemy Clark Hannon.
