The Dead Can'T Cry

It's May, 1945 and Berlin is in its last throes. Children in the city wake and find that their parents and families are gone, and it's too quiet. Where are the exploding shells, the shouts of soldiers and the screams and groans of the wounded and dying? Other children, far from the city, also wake to a vacant and silent world. Towers where soldiers with machine guns stood sentinel are abandoned and the gates that held them prisoner are open and beckoning. They leave their hiding places. Some want to find family and friends and wander through rubble strewn streets, and others seek escape and wander through deserted country side. When they feel most lost and alone, they hear music. It's hypnotic and calls and takes them to happier places; one is walking on a mountain pathway, another is chasing a favorite puppy and a third is with his parents and sisters in a strange city of tall buildings. When the music stops, they wake and find themselves back in the rubble or empty countryside. A mysterious giant stands in front of them. He tells them in each of their languages that they're not alone anymore, they don't have to be afraid and he's going to take them to a safe place. Some children run, but his music brings them back while others stoically accept this new captivity. As the days pass and he gathers more children, his message is always, "Don't be afraid, you're not alone anymore and I'm going to take you to a safe place." Can they escape? Old hatreds fall away and alliances form. One of these is between a scared and lonely Jewish boy and the oldest Goebbels's daughter. They discover who the mysterious man is and where he's taking them, and as horrifying as that knowledge is, there are things that are worse...
