Liz looked at Lucy in sheer amazement. "What the hell are you writing? "Some stuff about aliens, vampires, robots, bionic pornstars and an early agricultural tribe who worshipped a big wooden penis." ***** "I'm writing a novel." I told the Mutant Lab Monkey one day, with a wholly surprising purposefulness for me. "An historical novel." The Mutant Lab Monkey beamed at me, leaning in with a delicious sense of conspiracy. "Tell me more." she grinned. "Well, I'm setting it in 2012." I told her. "And it centres around the life story of one character but branches out into the stories from her extended family, too. And the stories intertwine in the past and present." What are you going to call your main character?" "Lucy." I replied, my cheeks flushing a little. "Your own name?" she smiled. ***** Two women named Lucy, separated by a vast tract of time and space, would seem to be writing each other's stories, while both of their worlds are breaking down. In 2012, when the world was predicted to end according to The Mayan Calender, Lucy is supposed to have been trying to write the next 'Fifty Shades of Grey', but she has changed her mind. And even she isn't really sure what she's writing about anymore. Meanwhile, in a far distant future, another Lucy, also known as Monkeyspawn Skydiamond, is trying to hold onto her memory, and keep her story away from the memory holes, by writing in fanciful tales that encode her vital information within them. She is writing a novel about another Lucy from the past, and telling her story; the one about Lucy's struggle to make sense of her life and her relationships in the face of social forces that she is only now starting to name. The one about the struggle for girls and women to retain a sense of their own humanity in the face of a culture where their "worth" is calculated according to whether or not their particular configuration of body parts is porn-worthy or not. And where they will find themselves shouted down as a "PRUDE!," or a modern day heretic, if they don't subscribe to the view that a least some porn is a worthy cultural creation. The human story is a complicated one, and some humans get more of a say about how we tell it than others. They don't call it History for nothing. What if the evil part of human nature is not natural at all? For what is human "nature" anyway in the face of cultural coercion? When the story of sexual politics has so long been one in which both sex and politics were defined at a woman's expense, how can she accept it? It's time to rewrite the story.
